Alexis stood frozen, her breath caught somewhere between her chest and her throat. She couldn’t move, couldn’t tear her gaze away from the girl.
Oh shit, am I charmed? Is this what it feels like?
Those large, luminous eyes veiled in innocence blinked up at her. The dark curly hair framing her angelic face perfectly complemented her tawny complexion. She wore a doll-like white dress lined with intricate gold lace. Not one rip, or stain, or thread out of place.
She looked unaffected by this gruesome world. Untouched by death. Yet, when she smiled, she revealed a pair of tiny fangs that sent an icy shiver snaking down Alexis’s spine.
“Poor little guy.” A delicate accent carried her sweet voice. “His wing got caught in the propeller.” She lifted the limp bat toward the sky. “But he should be better now.”
